Tarsha Astbury, Fifth Grade ELA & Science Teacher

Tarsha is a Mainer who grew up next door in Penobscot. She has has been teaching for 16 years with experience in grades 3-8. Tarsha joined the BHCS community in 2014 as the fifth grade science and ELA teacher. Teaching literacy is one of her passions and she is currently working towards her literacy specialist Master's degree. Tarsha enjoys practicing yoga, which is a skill she shares with her students. She also loves reading, hiking, exploring nature, and gardening.

 

Mark Baxter, Fifth Grade Math & Social Studies Teacher

A Maine native from Verona Island, Mark joined BHCS in 2009 teaching fifth grade and often coaching soccer and basketball. Outside of school, Mark loves movies, sports, fishing, the water, rabbits, and pinball. Mark runs RESULTS basketball clinics and serves as a personal basketball trainer for players from second grade to professionals.

 

Nancy Bos, PK-4 Special Education Teacher

For over 20 years, Nancy has been helping our little ones in need grow as readers and learners. Her "energetic" chocolate lab, Tanner, keeps her busy outside hiking and exploring our great state of Maine.

 

April Chapman, School Nurse

A graduate of BHCS, April returned last year as our school nurse and has over 20 years of nursing experience. She lives in Blue Hill with her husband and two sons. In her free time she enjoys reading, traveling, and is an avid UMO hockey fan.

Patty Clapp, Fourth Grade Teacher

Born and raised in Blue Hill, Patty is enjoying her second round of teaching here at BHCS. She and her husband have raised 4 children and now are grandparents. Traveling, reading, movies, and crafts are some hobbies she enjoys when she isn’t teaching!

 

Judy Cole, First Grade Teacher

Judy has been working with first and second graders for over 20 years. She is a certified Reading Recovery Teacher who has a B.S. in Elementary Education K-8 and a Master's in Literacy from the University of Maine, and is currently teaching first grade. In her spare time she enjoys hiking and kayaking at Acadia National Park, running, and spending time in Maryland. Judy lives in Bucksport with her three sons.

 

Tim Cyr, Head Cook

Tim joined us in 2015 as Head Cook. He is a graduate of the Washington County Community College and has completed advanced studies at the Culinary Institute of America. For the last 20 years Tim has worked for Penobscot Job Corps Center as Food Service Manager and owns Hermon Family Restaurant. Tim resides in Penobscot with his wife Joyce. They have raised three boys and have two very active grandsons!

 

Katie Danielson, Response to Intervention (RtI) Coordinator

Katie has been a member of the BHCS faculty for nine years and is currently working on her C.A.S. as a literacy specialist. She lives in Blue Hill with her husband Dave and two children. At school she enjoys working with students in kindergarten through eighth grade and at home enjoys boating, golfing, and traveling.

Vicki Davis, Middle School Math Teacher

Vicki, a Maine native, joined BHCS in 2011. Her greatest hobby is being a mom and wife. Vicki has four children, three are education majors at their respective colleges and one is in high school. Her husband, David, teaches technology in Brooksville. In her spare time she loves singing with a band from Deer Isle.

 

Amy Drenga, Grade 6 ELA & Social Studies Teacher

Amy is a new teacher who joined BHCS this year to teach sixth grade ELA and Social Studies. After spending 23 years as an educator in Western Massachusetts, she and her husband have relocated to Surry, Maine. In her free time she loves to spend time with her family while exploring all the beautiful areas of Downeast Maine.

 

Laurie Friend, Educational Technician III

Born and raised in Aroostook County, Laurie has been an ed tech at BHCS since 2004. She is married and has three wonderful children, three amazing grandsons, and one beautiful granddaughter--all whom she loves with all her heart. Laurie loves working with children, which is her passion. When not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and enjoying Maine's beautiful sunsets with her husband from their oceanside cottage in Brooklin.

 

Tracy Gandy, Library Media Specialist

Tracy has been lurking in libraries for many years as an English teacher and librarian in Florida, California, and Rhode Island. She is excited to share her love of literature and research with the students at BHCS. When not alphabetizing and organizing books, Tracy spends her time traveling and reading.

 

Laura Gatcomb, Educational Technician I

Originally from Texas, Laura has been an ed. tech. at BHCS for over ten years. Laura loves working with her kids at school, and outside of school enjoys gardening, going to the beach, and playing with her four dogs.

 

Victoria George, First Grade Teacher

Victoria was raised in St. George, Maine. She went out of state for college and earned a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. She moved back to Maine in 2013 after teaching for three years in Rhode Island. She enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, and reading.

 

Darian Gove, Educational Technician III

Darian grew up outside of Pittsburgh and attended Allegheny College where she studied neuroscience and psychology. After college, she moved to Maine where she has worked 1-on-1 with special needs children. She lives in Deer Isle and enjoys playing softball, reading, and spending time with her family.

 

Helen Graikoski, Reading Recovery Teacher

Helen has been a Reading Recovery teacher at BHCS since 2003. She loves working with students to help them improve their reading and writing skills. Outside of school, Helen enjoys gardening, hiking, paper engineering, and traveling.

 

Megan Granger, School Counselor

Having been raised in Blue Hill herself, Megan was happy to return to BHCS in 2006 as our school counselor after 9 years working as an outpatient and private practice child and family clinician. Megan enjoys hiking, running, exploring the coastal islands, and watercolor painting when she is not busy traveling to various ice hockey rinks throughout Maine with her family.

 

Marina Grivois, Speech & Language Therapist

Marina joined us this year as our Speech & Language Therapist is from pretty far away (Germany!). She lived in Massachusetts for the past four years where received her Master's degree from Boston University and moved to Maine this year with her wonderful baby Adrian and loving husband to be closer to family. This is her first year at BHCS and is very excited to be here (and we're very excited to have her here!). Outside of school, she enjoys traveling around the world, kayaking, swimming, hiking, playing the piano, and reading.

 

Jane Haldane, Educational Technician III

Jane is from away... Way away England in fact via Turkey and Egypt. She joined BHCS as an ed tech in 2005 and is now working in RTI which she loves. Her daughter Nellie attends GSA and when Jane is not driving Nellie to the ski slopes or soccer games, she enjoys her dogs, chickens, fishing, and gardening.

Emily Herrick, Second Grade Teacher

Emily is a new teacher at BHCS who joined us this year to teach second grade. Born and raised in Blue Hill and a 2006 graduate of BHCS, she is happy to once again be a part of the BHCS family after two years of teaching first grade. Outside of school, she enjoys cooking, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Nell Herrmann, Middle School Science Teacher

Trained as a scientist, Nell began her teaching career at BHCS in 2000. She moved to Pennsylvania in 2002 where she taught middle and high school until she returned to BHCS in 2013. She has done biological research in Venezuela, Costa Rica, Greenland, Antarctica, and off the coast of Belize. Nell's main goal is to teach kids that science is exciting and accessible.

 

Sherry Holbrook, Kindergarten Teacher

Sherry grew up in central Maine, moved to Blue Hill after college, and has been teaching kindergarten at BHCS since 1994. Sherry loves the coastal life and feels there's nothing quite like going for a summer sail on Blue Hill Bay or heading to Curtis Cove or Newbury Neck for a swim.

 

Greg Holman, Spanish Teacher

Greg has a BA in psychobiology from Bowdoin College and has been involved in education for about 24 years as an outdoor science naturalist, science, math, ESL, and Spanish teacher. He taught English in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico for 16 years. He has been at BHCS since 2014 and enjoys sharing his Spanish language and Mexican cultural knowledge with his students. Greg enjoys theatre and spending time with his daughters.

 

Kat Hudson, Middle School ELA Teacher

Kat keeps coming back to BHCS! She has been a science education consultant and teacher of ELA and Social Studies in Massachusetts, Maine, Iowa, and overseas in Thailand and Kuwait. A 6+1 Traits trainer and Lucy Calkins writing workshop advocate, Kat shares her passion for writing with students. You'll find her writing in the forest, doing yoga, and planning new projects and adventures.

 

Jessica Hutchins-Conrad, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

Jessica began working at BHCS in 2008 as a one-on-one ed tech and later moved on to work as an ed tech in RtI. She is now enjoying her days at BHCS as the Pre-K teacher. Outside of school, Jessica loves to spend time with her two wonderful sons and loving husband.

Matt Jurick, Technology Director

A midwest native from Cleveland, Matt joined BHCS in 2010 where he teaches computer skills, STEAM, and digital fabrication. Matt holds a BA in English and Theatre from Baldwin-Wallce and an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from UMaine. In 2014, Matt built the IDEA Center at BHCS--the first-of-its-kind K-8 fabrication lab/makerspace in Maine, funded almost entirely through grants. It's in the IDEA Center where our students work with advanced equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machines to create, explore, and learn. Outside of school, Matt loves movies, roller coasters, and competitive electric kart racing.

 

Karen Larkin, Second Grade Teacher

Karen joined BHCS in 1986 as a kindergarten teacher and has taught first and second grades since then. She enjoys the challenge of teaching students at this age to read and write and become independent thinkers as they explore and develop their creativity. Karen loves gardening, boating, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Bob McCormick, Physical Education Teacher

Bob grew up in northern New Jersey with five brothers and five sisters. After receiving his Master's degree from the University of Maine, he joined the BHCS teaching staff in 1978 and has been here since. Bob enjoys Celtic step dancing and can often be heard practicing in the gym.

 

Audrey Means, General Music Teacher

A native of Maine and a UMaine alumnae, Audrey has taught general music, vocal music, and musical theatre at BHCS since 1999. She works one-on-one with special needs students and has an interest in music therapy. Outside of school, she loves spending time with her family and animals, enjoys winter, and playing her clarinet.

Heather Nelson, Kindergarten Teacher

Heather has been teaching for 32 years; from Sierra Leone with the Peace Corps, to a residential outdoor program in Vermont, and pre-school in Portland, Maine. In 1991 she moved to Blue Hill and taught first grade in Sedgwick. In 1997 she began her Masters at UMO and began teaching first and second grade in Brewer. She began teaching kindergarten in Blue Hill in 2007.

 

Rachel Nightingale, Sixth Grade Math & Science Teacher

This artsy, competitive, fun-loving New Yorker joined the BHCS community in 2008. She has a BFA from RIT and a Master's from UMaine. Rachel teaches sixth grade math and science, and has two lovely daughters in the school.

 

Melissa Norwood, Fourth Grade Teacher

Melissa grew up in Portland, Maine and moved to the Blue Hill Peninsula to raise her 3 children. Joe is a senior at GSA, Tucker is in eighth grade, and Katie is in seventh, both here at BHCS. Melissa has been at BHCS since 2005, starting with Joe's first grade class! Melissa loves spending time with her family, going on spontaneous adventures, and dreaming of beach weather!

 

Cate Reuter, Educational Technician III

Cate grew up in New York, went to college in Kansas and has lived in Maine for 20 years. Her passion is gardening, and works with students on the school garden and greenhouse.

 

Penny Ricker, Visual Arts Teacher

A lifelong resident of Blue Hill, Penny came to teaching after raising 5 kids of her own. She started exploring visual arts with students here at BHCS in 2008. She is an artist, photographer, and avid gardener.

 

Stacie Robbins, Educational Technician III

Stacie is thrilled to join BHCS with 15 years experience serving some of Maine's most challenging children and families in the Greater Portland area. She graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maine with a degree in Child Development. After 17 years she returned to her beautiful hometown of Deer Isle to get her parents healthy and keep her dad lobstering. Her exceptional daughter attends the University of Southern Maine and their dog, Sadie, helps keep her smiling by running the beaches with her every day.

 

Stacy Roguski, Third Grade Teacher

Stacy grew up in Ontario, Canada where she received her Bachelor's of Education. She later moved to Maine and has enjoyed her years teaching in various grades. Her Greek heritage was the inspiration for moving to Greece where she taught English as a second language to both children and adults. She met her husband there and has twin girls. A calling to be closer to her family brought Stacy back to Maine and taught second grade at Ellsworth Elementary School before joining BHCS this year as our new third grade teacher. We're very excited to have her here!

 

Shelly Schildroth, Principal

After attending BHCS as a student, Shelly was hired as a teacher after graduating from the University of Maine. She taught fifth grade for four years and then moved to teach third and fourth for the next six years. As a member of the union-wide curriculum team she found a passion in curriculum and pursued a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and then a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership. She was hired as the Curriculum Coordinator for School Union #93 and then hired as the Principal of BHCS in 2016. Shelly lives in Blue Hill with her husband Cory and three children: Taylor, Mya, and Chloe.

 

Bill Schubeck, Instrumental Music Teacher

Bill has been teaching for almost 30 years with the last 12 years as our band director. He and his wife Heidi were members of the Oakum Bay String Band which played contra dances in Blue Hill for many years. Bill also plays piano with Jazztime 99 and trumpet with the Brooklin Town Band. He is a proud father of three daughters, and among his many construction projects has built a 3 bedroom house of East Blue Hill granite.

 

Jerin Smith, Assistant Secretary

A life-long member of the Blue Hill community, Jerin was hired at BHCS in 2002 as part-time assistant secretary and later joined as part-time assistant cook in the kitchen, making her the "girl of many hats" in the school. In her free time, Jerin likes to decorate, do arts and crafts, and give things a festive touch wherever she can.

 

Jim Smith, Custodian

Jim is a Bucksport native and joined BHCS as a custodian after working at the Bucksport mill. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his granddaughter.

 

Loretta Smith, School Secretary

Loretta joined BHCS in 1986 collecting lunch money, became secretary two years later, and has been here ever since. She loves seeing kids start in kindergarten and come back later as adults with their own children. She has 3 children and 2 grandchildren, all of whom attended BHCS. Some people know her for her sweaters as knitting is her favorite hobby.

 

Kyle Snow, Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Kyle grew up in Dexter, Maine, and before coming to BHCS in 2011 spent time in the U.S. Army and working for a boat builder on MDI. Here at BHCS, he currently teaches seventh grade. When not in school, you can find him playing with his kids, watching old monster movies, camping, or traveling the state on some sort of historical or genealogical wild goose chase.

 

Susan Snyder, Educational Technician III

With a degree in Early Child Development, Susan began her journey teaching at Head Start. She later went on to teach at a parent-cooperative preschool and then Kindergarten. Since 2005 she has enjoyed sharing the beautiful moments of each day with the children of Blue Hill.

 

Dena Sozio, Educational Technician III

Dena grew up in a small town in southern NJ, attended college in upstate NY, and lived in Philadelphia, Asheville, and Japan before discovering Blue Hill five years ago. Since moving here, she has worked as a math advisor/tutor at the Blue Hill Harbor School and as a developmental preschool teacher. She is the House Manager at New Surry Theatre and a local youth group leader. An artist and musician who loves singing, Dena currently sings with the Bagaduce Chorale and Evensong hospice singers.

 

Mary Tobey, 5-8 Special Education Teacher

An Adams School and GSA graduate, Mary is thrilled to be teaching at Blue Hill Consolidated School after many years teaching on MDI. This is her second year at BHCS. Mary earned her Master's degree from USM in 2003. Outside of teaching, Mary loves time with family, friends, and basically anything outside--from sailing to snowboarding.

 

Meredith Townsend, Educational Technician III

Originally from Western Mass, Meredith graduated from UNCG and then spent some time on Cape Cod before moving to Maine. Meredith joined the BHCS community in 2014 as the Pre-K Ed Tech. In her free time, Meredith loves to spend time with her husband and twin daughters.

 

Robert Violette, Custodian

Robert joins the BHCS community this year as one of our incredible custodians. Robert owns and operates Violette's Mowing and More and enjoys antique cars, fishing, and spending time with his family.

 

Jamie Wentworth, Head of Maintenance

Born and raised in Bucksport, Jamie worked at the paper mill for 27 years until it closed and then joined the BHCS staff as our Head of Maintenance in 2015. Jamie lives in Bucksport with his wife Sue.
